Donating for Covid Relief operations for income tax exemptions

The nation is fighting Covid-19 pandemic threat. NGOs and the goverment is working tirelessly in Covid relief operations to avoid a community spread.
Dreading income tax deductions? Who doesn't? Through many of our investments, we try to look for ways to get income tax exemption and make many choices that suit our financial needs and requirements, all in the name of saving tax. We hope you have considered all the options available to you; also, if you haven't already heard of this, we hope you do now – donations can help you with income tax deductions! Want us to elucidate further? Well, buckle up!
Firstly, let's understand what Section 80G of the Indian Income Tax Act is all about. This section under the IT Act allows an income tax deduction on donations made to any charitable organization and certain relief funds. One must also note that all donations are not qualified for deductions under Section 80G; only donations made to prescribed funds become certified for a deduction. Income tax exemption can be claimed by any taxpayer – individuals, company, firm, or any other person.
Taxpayers can claim income tax deductions under section 80G only if their donation is made through cheque, draft, or cash. While one can donate any amount to a charity/NGO, the deduction is only obtainable for a cash donation that does not surpass INR 10,000. Donation supplies like food, clothing, medical provisions, etc. are not considered under Section 80G deduction claims. Additionally, to avail of this income tax exemption, one must present the evidence of payment given by the trust/entity as a substantiation of the donation made. It is also essential to ensure that this proof/receipt includes the name, address, PAN card number, registration number of the trust, name of the donor and amount contributed, written in figures and words; these details come handy while filing taxes.
Provisions have also been made by the government of India through which NRIs making a donation can also avail of this benefit as per Section 35AC or 80GG of the Indian Income Tax Act.
NGOs are better able to carry out many of their social welfare activities and programs through the donations they receive. One such NGO is Save the Children; work their funds to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children, every single day. They run on resources and donations to sustain their projects, which also helps them set up many more programs and services with the aim of making a difference. Any donation made by you – one-time or monthly will be utilized by them to plan and implement projects that benefit the disadvantaged children of our nation, be it education, health and nutrition, and child protection.
Donate to make a change and help the NGOs fight this pandemic.
