What do disaster relief organizations do?
Save
the Children is one of India’s most trusted NGOs working to improve the lives
of underprivileged children. Since its operations in India began in 2008, we
have transformed the lives of over 10.1 million children across India. Save the
Children also function as one of the major disaster relief organizations in
India. It directs its efforts to reduce children’s vulnerability in the times
of emergency. Our priority is ensuring the rights of children to survival and
development when disaster strikes. We act as fast as possible to help the
affected impoverished children and their families to move on their lives and
restore their livelihoods.
Disaster
relief (also called emergency management or humanitarian response) is the
process of responding to catastrophic situations such as natural disasters in
order to provide humanitarian aid to the communities who have been adversely
effected. This involves undertaking rebuilding, extending financial as well as
emotional support, and reducing further risks as much as possible.
Save
the Children directs its efforts towards providing children with a safe space
to study in the aftermath of a natural disaster. We also strive to rehabilitate
as many people as possible, while distributing relief supplies during times of
emergency. Save the Children is dedicated to protecting children from
being trafficked and employed as child labourers.
One
of the best ways to save lives in an emergency is to be adequately prepared.
Proper planning and risk mitigation can help reduce the negative impacts of all
disasters.
When
a crisis strikes, people lose things of absolute importance such as food,
shelter, clothing, documents, and livelihoods. Emergency responders can help
provide at-risk children and their families with the necessary support and
supplies they would need. Thanks to the generosity of people making disaster relief donations, in times of
recent emergencies, we’ve been able to provide food supplies, hygiene kits and
other resources required to the afflicted people.
In
2018, Save the Children, provided humanitarian relief to more than 87,954
children in the event of large scale disasters. During such moments of crisis,
the central and state governments welcome financial assistance from
international donors, other NGOs, and the United Nations.
