The ‘Beti bachao beti padhao’ campaign

The ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative was launched by Prime Minister Modi on January 22, 2015, in Haryana. Translating into ‘Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child’, this program aimed to give young girls access to large-scale welfare services. It was devised to give the girl child access to survival, safety, and education while celebrating the girl child in an effort to fight India’s deep-rooted gender bias towards women.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana’ is India’s most high profile and widespread campaign to empower the girl child. It is a program being run jointly by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

As per the census data of 2001, the child sex ratio in India (0-6 years) was a mere 927 girls per 1000 boys. This further declined in 2011 to a staggering 918 girls for every 1,000 boys. Addressing and improving this dwindling CSR is one of the principal intentions of this scheme. It is widely supported by NGOs like Save the Children who are already doing extensive ground-work in fostering girl child education and welfare. It covers all states and union territories and has three primary objectives.

1. To prevent female infanticide
2. To devise new schemes and work cohesively to make sure that every girl child is safe and protected.
3. To ensure that every girl gets a quality education.

Save the Children supports ‘Beti Padhao Beti Bachao’ by undertaking various programs to educate young girls. We have also provided necessary structures like libraries to support access to education. Save the Children has empowered many rural girls to become their family’s first-generation learners and participate in national academic events.

Under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, a savings scheme called the Sukanya Samriddhi Account has been introduced. This is an account exclusively for girls, where parents or guardians can save money which will go towards their education and marriage. There will be no tax deduction from this account. This will help tackle the negative perception of girls being considered a financial burden.

The scheme also provides a good rate of interest. Withdrawal from this account is permitted only to the girl child after she attains the age of 18. This will also help provide financial security to girls when they become adults.

Eligibility Criteria:
• A family should have Girl Child
• A family should open the SSA (Sukanya Samriddhi Account) in any bank
• A girl child should be Indian and NRIs are not eligible.
Required Documents:
• Girl Birth certificate
• Identity card of parents
• Aadhar card
• Address proof: Passport, Driving license, Utility bills like water, telephone, electricity, etc
• Recent passport size photograph

Save the Children also partners with leading corporates to help them focus on their social goals as a part of their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). We facilitated education across schools in Jharkhand and imparted training in extra-curricular activities, as a part of the P&G’S Shiksha project.
