The issue of child labour has been one that has led to several children losing their chance at a better life. Being forced into labour due to financial circumstances, neglect, or even as a result of trafficking, such children grow up to have disturbed lives. The eradication of child labour is therefore the need of the hour owing to the following reasons:

Child labour contributes to physical health complications

In most cases, children are used as labour force in industries and commercial spaces where the hazard to life is higher. Where adults are aware of the consequences of working in fields that are dangerous to life, children are more susceptible and often forced into working. Employers are hardly concerned of what their labourers go through, making the entire circumstance even more concerning. While physical health deterioration is clearly seen, mental health is often ignored, leading to a worsening of the one’s mental state. The chances of children engaged in child labour turning to the use of drugs and substance abuse is also higher with lack of overseeing by an elder.

Childhood is one of the most precious phases in the life of an individual where people are their most innocent. Child labour strips children of their way of perceiving things through this innocence, making them bitter, resentful, filled with anger and sorrow from an early age. At an age where children need to play, learn, and build their own identity, being enforced into child labour hinders the opportunity for social development. An unhealthy social development during children further leads to a lack of social skills in adulthood.

Apart from these drastic effects, research also indicates that children who are forced into labour as children are smaller in size compared to children who grow in favourable circumstances. All of these factors prove the need for eradication of child labour, giving children the chance to grow in a healthy environment.
